A blend for Jonathan Green Black Beauty Ultra?

Hi. I'm near Boston (6b) and have been overseeding my lawn with JG for the past 2 years and it's filling out nicely. I still have some tough areas and bare spots (especially in the back yard) and will be seeding again in the fall. I was talking to a few lawn pros who recommended slice seeding—with their own seed blends.

I've heard people suggest using different seeds to thicken turf and fight disease, but I don't want a "patchy" look. Does anyone know of a seed that would blend seamlessly with Jonathan Green Black Beauty? After all, it is pretty expensive, and I wouldn't mind a cheaper option for filling the smaller spots ;)

Here are some pics. My front lawn (in front of wooden fence) is in good shape. Fairly dense and healthy. My back lawn (with swing set) is getting there SLOWLY. It's much thinner and has bare spots (Red Thread ruined it earlier this month) and still needs lots of work.

FYI: I added 7 yards of loam last year and graded it before reseeding and it's definitely improved (although, left a lot of pebbles behind!) Let me know what you think. Thanks!

Thanks. So far I've put down:
  • Prodiamine
  • Lime
  • Biochar
  • Fert (24-0-11)
  • JG "Love Your Soil"

We've had steady rains lately (can't say exactly because I've been out of town), but last month we got bombed and that's when I got serious red thread/fungus/moss. I treated it with some Liquid Fert (27-0-0), MossEX and DiseaseEX. That seemed to stop it but some infected spots went bald. I was going to put down more fert but they say excess nitrogen can CAUSE red thread, and since I wasn't sure if it was the heavy rain or too much fert already, I skipped doing another application.

I was considering hitting it with more Proadiamine before summer, but someone told me to wait until fall. I'm still learning/experimenting with the weeds. Normally I seed every spring but this year said NO, I'm tackling the weeds. And hey, it's actually paid off...

Great details that you shared. Yeah hold off on the Prodiamine app as it sounds like you put down early spring. Great advice is to hold off until another app in fall. Hard to eliminate crabgrass during summer if you miss the window. I would hand pull or use a spot spray with a post herbicide. Not sure when your last dose of N was but I would give it another 24-0-11 (I assume Lesco fert). If you are giving a .5 to 1lb of N per dose that should suffice. Give your lawn some time to grow while you give it another dose. If you recently put down Prodiamine you may need to wait to spot seed. If you put down your Prodiamine app early spring, you could rake up the bald areas and seed, fertilize, and keep the seed areas moist.

Yeah, I've been plucking the few weeds by hand. I don't think I'll touch those bald spots since the kids play in the yard and would just trample them. Come fall I implement my "Stay off the lawn!" policy until I can grow and mow :) Btw, it was the Lesco fert, and I think you're right: one more bag might do the trick...it's still lagging in rich color. Thanks!

That is hilarious. I know I have two kids and to have them play in the lawn is like my brain telling them its ok, its just grass, but in my mind grass should never be walked on...LOL

The best solution is to go with ProPlugger: https://www.amazon.com/ProPlugger-Garden-Planter-Weeder-Plugger/dp/B003MRTVUI/ref=sr_1_1?crid=3MLMYLFULL18X&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.b04BLdJMH7AccGAolPpT2dipa969Fo3J6EA4gWV3jpcrsJnhkOt7SEW8yp2mjZufqWYA-tzevGXyXcwXDcekD4aNjg8v7ew55CdqblfuDKNDkNiw8kTsL4qsbCrSxe1WNGOH85C_vuA3dqOvELn-KGbfSLWhdrmx-_yQoN2RMFXuzTEAWhkQqjYreknoWDAMBMTPWWbfzj05vzqHQv6LqIUcQ6gQPsRunncLyou2bHpodyRpmzp-2Ks1bMZ1CntZNMlsuNXFnAVY83rlqnNqTtKAg6PLYtmueNeLZ1G2El4.We5QwXGzcdNrN21PGrO7zQhdPZzgbeRncwhfuc8oZds&dib_tag=se&keywords=pro+plugger&qid=1717175563&sprefix=pro+plugger,aps,101&sr=8-1

I would place roughly 40-50 plugs back in those bald sections. Grass should repair itself over the next few weeks. Put down an micronutrient/soil amendment such as Love Your Soil or Live Earth:

Contains a little bit of iron. But put down a bag of Ironite. This will help give you that blue-green look.

My kids complain much less every year as the grass gets nicer and thicker. They love playing on it. Thanks for the recommendations--I'll definitely try the Live Earth conditioner. I've used Simple Lawn Humid Acid in the past but it's pricey.

I’m going to suggest sticking with the Johnathan Green black beauty line of seeds versus going cheaper. Been there and done that with the so-called less expensive seed options. Stay away from the lawn patch mixes. I’m also in Massachusetts zone 6B a little south of Boston I’ve been using Lesco, all pro team and black beauty original. I stay away from blends that have Kentucky bluegrass in them because I’m always over seeding.

I think you’re on the right track. Find your watering your feeding and your weed control. Be careful with pre-emergence if you’re going to oversee this fall. You can go to the UMass website and find results for their own turf, grass testing and check out varieties that have done well in our area. I have 1800 ft.² of a grass called turf one. Tested high in the ranks by UMass.
You can always read the back of the seat bags and the labels to find out exactly what color putting in their bags.

my last bit of advice is any seating you do from this point on just be mindful of the label and what’s in the bag. I do not care for how the rye in My Lawn looks against the tall fescue.

i lost about 60-70% of my lawn to PB and over seeded this area with JG BB Original due to budget and availability
Its come in well and matches up to what survived.

Have a bought with fungus here also but much better than last 2 seasons. First puc is taken back in the shadows and Im impressed with how well the JG Original did in the shade.

Nice coverage on that big yard. JG does well in the shade: I was having trouble until I used their Sun & Shade and Dense Shade seeds. Those really stood up well under the trees and grew in thick. In fact, I've decided to just go straight JG on my lawn. I love the texture and color (so much different than the lawns in my neighborhood), and asked the landscapers to give me quotes for slice seeding with JG. Thanks for the UMASS info, I'll have to check that out.
