It’s been one week since I put out Hi-Yield Turf & Ornamental Weed & Grass Stopper with dimension and Gordon’s Trimec Crabgrass Plus Lawn Weed Killer and here is my yard today.
Plant Terrestrial plant Groundcover Grass Herbaceous plant

Plant Natural landscape Grass Groundcover Evergreen

Plant Grass Groundcover Road surface Shrub

Plant Terrestrial plant Groundcover Grass Flowering plant

Plant Road surface Vegetation Asphalt Grass

I was definitely expecting better results. Some are showing signs of dying off but most are not. Am I missing something? How can I get rid of these weeds? Brand new to this lawn care thing and ready for these weeds to be gone. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Dimension is a pre-emergent and will not kill weeds. Trimec takes 2 to 4 weeks depending on maturity of the weed and temperature to name a few variables.

Get something like Weed Free Zone which is more or less Trimec with Carfentrazone which browns/wilts the weeds fairly quickly. However, you probably want to wait another 2 weeks before making app of Trimec or applying WFZ since you run the risk of damaging what little grass there is.

Looked at your pictures a second time and you really have a huge salad going on. You do have Poa Annua and Trimec wont do anything for that.

Certainty, Revolver or Negate will help you with Poa.

With so many weeds you need to put the Dimension down in the fall. Many of the weeds you have aren‘t controlled by pre-emergents since they are perennials. You need some Gallery along with the Dimension to broaden the control spectrum.

I definitely do. We just bought this house about a month ago and I’m determined to kill these weeds and get some high quality turf going. I’m brand new to the lawn care game. Previously I just mowed and didn’t care much about the yard but now that we have our own place I want to have the best yard in the neighborhood.

The backyard is covered in Poa Annua and other weeds. The front yard is a little better weed wise and much less Poa Annua. This year I will definitely make sure this yard gets pre emergent in the fall to help.

Do I need to put down Certainty, revolver, and negate together or are you saying I just need to pick one of those three? Do I also go ahead and get the Gallery now and put that down or only the next time I use dimension?

I’ve learned a lot these last two weeks about different herbicides and products out there. Now I’m still trying to figure when to use what and what products can be and should be used together. Like if I use dimension, can I also use prodiamine? Still so much to figure out but I’m getting there.

Either of the three will kill Poa.

I made a chart showing what weeds the major pre-emergent manage.

You are at the end of the POA season now, so spending money to kill it right now is pointless.

You should spend your dollars on Celsius, Certainty, and Prodiamine to ready for the summer. Buy a good battery powered sprayer and build a DFW wand.

Put out the Prodiamine in the next three weeks.

By mid May if you have more weeds popping up mix up a mid rate batch of Celsius and Certainty and spray. These are very slow kill so just spray and forget about it. In 5-6 weeks your yard will be weed free.

Buy a "cheap" bag of 22-0-0 Fertilizer, and get it on the lawn mid May. I don't know your lawn sqft, but I would guess 1K front and 1K back. So 3-4lbs of 22-0-0 front, 3-4lbs back and then get ready to mow.

By June 1 if you are watering enough you will be mowing every third day at 1inch and most like win the neighborhood yard game.

Ride out the Victory until Mid July when the rain stops. If you can keep watering (no summer water restrictions) just keep on top of the mowing and apply more fertilizer if you want more grass.

Once the fall comes around get your fall Prodiamine app out around Mid October to prevent the POA from showing up.

Keep it simple the first year. Mowing and watering will be the most important part once the weeds are gone.

This is just the condensed version of the Bermuda Bible: The New Testament. Remember, Bermuda grass is easy to grow, but once you start feeding it N you will have to stay on top of the mowing. The more you mow the thicker it will become.

Wow, that is a lot of great information. Thank you for taking the time to write that up. I'll get Celsius, Certainty, and Prodiamine ordered tonight. Are there different brands that make those products and is one better than another? And do I need to use a surfactant with any of that?

Will it hurt the bermuda to put down the Prodiamine if I have already put down the Hi-yield with dimension?

My yard size is about 4k sq. ft. total so I can do the conversions for that.

I generally prefer a slower kill. sometimes with faster kill stuff, the plant dies but it dies so quickly that the poison never hits the roots, and then it regrows. A really slow kill seems to be more effective int he long run. That's been my experience, anyway...

I have had the same experience. The fast kill is simply more expensive in the long run.

I dont know the rate of prodiamine you put out, but you can wait if you think you have the right amount. Your weed pressure will let you know. I also read your original post. If you put it out with a drop spreader you will really see where it was put down.

I have only used the name brands and you want the high temp stuff. Not being able to apply above 85F is a no go for this area.

I know its warming up (or at least was), but don't stress yet. If you scalp now you will have green up, but it wont really take off and fill in until the end of April.

Start gathering your supplies now and get ready for May 1. That is when you will be able to pump the N, Water, and Mow. By June you will have a nice stand of Bermuda.
